The Use of Technology in Psychology
Traditionally, we have
seen the dichotomous separations of various disciplines and fields of study
such as science and construction, business administration and law and even psychology
and the field of technology. These separations and strict boundaries set
between the various disciplines allow society to more clearly construct their
notions and ideas about particular topics as well as provide a more organized
system of structure in their daily lives.
In
recent times however, we have seen the breaking down of these walls between the
various disciplines. The ways in which many of these fields overlap have been
explored and at many times provide an even more efficient way to understand and
practice a particular field of study. This can be said for the field of
psychology as the incorporation of technology in its practice has indeed
increased its practicability and effectiveness.
Education
So just how exactly has technology aided the field of
psychology? First and foremost, technology has had a major impact on the educational
aspect of psychology. In times past when one would have to spend hours in the
library physically searching for books (then actually searching through these
books), it is now possible to sit at home and have information at the click of
a finger. Research has never been easier (or not as laborious), not to mention
convenient as it can be conducted anywhere, as long as there is an active
Internet connection (Boss, 2017).
In addition to the aforementioned, the invention of
computers and technology has now made it possible for schooling to be done
online (not just in the field of psychology) thereby eliminating the issues of
geographical limitations and travel expenses. Technology has now made it
possible to earn a degree without having to be physically present on a school
campus (Boss, 2017).
Diagnostic Equipment
Several devices and programs have been developed to track and monitor
the health of persons/patients on physical, psychological and emotional levels.
Such devices and programs include magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanners, stress sensors,
AbilTo (program used to administer cognitive behavioral therapy) and
Optimism, a program designed to keep a track record of anything which affects
one’s state of mind (Boss, 2017).
Technology-Based Therapy
A very recent and still developing trend in the field of psychology,
technology-based therapy allows for therapist-client interaction via the
Internet. According to Maksimow (as cited in Careers in Psychology, n.d.), this
has been an excellent development, especially for specific populations such as
those that are unable to attend appointments due to physical constraints. In
addition, this type of therapy allows for a more comfortable therapeutic environment
as persons do not need to leave their home to engage in therapy; there is still
much concern regarding the stereotypes surrounding mental health, and so many
persons find online-based therapy more conducive. Finally, this method is very
convenient for persons who have an extremely busy schedule as it is possible to
fit in an online session during their lunch break or on evenings. Masksimow
noted that although this is quite a favorable method, reading clients’ body
language via online sessions is quite a challenge; confidentiality is also a
major issue.
Without a doubt, although the use of technology within
the field of psychology presents some drawbacks (as does anything else), this
recent development has most certainly provided marked benefits to both the
professional and the client.
